Substance Abuse Treatment Myths Prevalent In Florida

by | Nov 23, 2016 | Health

Substance abuse treatment is a necessity in Florida, especially if you are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Most people, however, don’t understand treatments and their options, or may have heard things that were untrue. While it’s important to focus on sobering up and living a healthy life, it’s also important to have the right information.

Cold Turkey

Many people still don’t understand that substance abuse is a disease. It’s not just something that people love to do and want to do. In most cases, their bodies force them to take the drugs because their brain feels like they need it. To stop taking them all at once or doing it “cold turkey” isn’t the right option for many. It can lead to seizures, severe withdrawal symptoms and make them feel like they aren’t in control.

One-Size-Fits-All

The problem with most substance abuse treatment options in Florida is that they can’t be a one-size-fits-all scenario. What triggers your need to use is different than someone else’s, so why would you think a plan of action that works for them will have the same effect on you? Therefore, it’s best to find a facility that offers a variety of options to help you lead a sober life.

Stop Whenever

Those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol cannot abstain for long periods. They may be able to stop using for a week or even a few months, but without proper help, they will turn back to their drug of choice. If you start looking at addiction as a disease, you will better understand that it isn’t something that can just be stopped in most cases. For example, if you have diabetes or any other disease, you’ll require lifestyle changes, medication, and other treatments to manage it. The same is true with alcoholism and drug use.
