Electrocardiograph (EKG) technicians, alternatively known as electrocardiogram or cardiographic technicians, perform diagnostic testing which help doctors identify and treat cardiovascular problems in patients. These tests are important because they aid in detecting irregularities in the heart that could results in heart disease or a heart attack.
Duties of an EKG technician include explaining testing procedures to patients, positioning patients and monitoring patients’ blood pressure. * Gain healthcare field experience. While it’s not mandatory, many employers prefer that applicants have some prior experience, such as a paramedic, nurse or EMT.
* Complete your on-the-job training. This is the primary method of becoming a successful EKG technician. This usually takes 4-6 weeks and is done under the close supervision of an EKG supervisor or cardiologist.
The EKG Technician Certification program consists of a combination of hands-on training, theory and lab work. Programs concentrate on using the EKG machine, practicing the 12-lead placement on patients and interacting with patients. Other aspects may include medical terminology and anatomy.
Once the course is complete, students have the option of taking the certification examination. While not required, it is highly recommended, as it can give an advantage over other applicants who have not acquired the certification.
